Danielle
Fleury; Japanese Culture Class 2013 Fall
This semester in Japanese culture class, we
went on outings to a few interesting places, and experienced aspects of
traditional Japanese culture.
First, we went to a Suntory Brewery.
There, we learned about the process of
making Suntory beer. We were able to sample one of their new beers, The Premium
Malts, at the end of the tour, but I didn`t like it very much (it was very
bitter).
Second, we practiced traditional Japanese dance. We
were given fans and shown the steps to some easier dances. They were still
rather difficult! It was nicer to watch the teacher than it was to try to
attempt it ourselves.
Third, we went to a place in the mountains
to do some pottery. The way there was beautiful, with mountains, fields and
flowers, and the studio was surrounded with really interesting clay sculptures. I made a tea bowl; but after getting the finished product back,
I`m not satisfied with how it turned out (so no picture!).
Fourth, we experienced Japanese Tea
ceremony, or sadō. I had a class on sadō back in Canada, so I
really enjoyed experiencing it again. The ceremony is calming and warm, and the
tools and traditional sweets, called wagashi, are beautiful.
Last,
we went to a town in Kumamoto called Yamaga, where the restored Yachioza
theatre is located. This theatre has existed since 1910, being used for all
kinds of performances and traditional arts demonstrations. The ceilings are
covered with repainted advertisements from the original theatre.
The
town of Yamaga also seemed like an interesting place, with many cafes and
shops. We also visited the Yamaga Lantern Museum, where giant sculptures made
of paper are preserved.
We
had lots of interesting experiences in the class, and went to places we
wouldn`t have gone to on our own. I`m looking forward to next year`s
activities!
