日本の文化の授業は本当に面白かったです！

馬場先生の授業は毎週の水曜日にあり日本の文化に関してものをしました。時々、土曜日も旅行しました。

舞踊（ぶよう）をできて、陶芸を作れて、能舞台（のうぶたい）を見に行って、サントリービール工場でビールを飲んで、茶道をする機会もあって、禅もできました。

行ったときにその日は本当に暑かったです。バスの旅行は大学から１時間半かかりました。

クラスは半分と半分バスに乗れました。みんなビール工場でついに到着した後、ツアーをしました。あまり分からなかったけど、ビールの作り方を見えました。その後で、サントリープレミアムビールを飲んでみました。美味しかったです！

舞踊

舞踊の先生は大学に来ました。先生は親切な年配の女性でした。５０年以上踊り続けているそうです。彼女はとても上手だったので、踊りの教え方は分かりやすかったです。有名な北海道の踊りもしました。でも、時々、踊りのステップは忘れてしまったので、多分バカみたいでした。しかし、頑張りました！

陶芸

陶芸は私の一番好きな旅行でした。なせなら、ポットやカップやスプーンを作ったからです。陶芸の先生はカップの作り方を見せました。その後で、私は自分の手で、カップを作って飾り付けました。楽しかったです。みなさん、一回は作ってみてください！

茶道

近代的な日本人にとって、茶道は日本の文化の大切な部分だと思います。また、歴史的で文化的な実践だと思います。そして、茶道をする機会をもらったことはすばらしかったです。

クリエン・ナイル

During the Japanese Culture class, we were given the opportunity to visit different places and see some pretty amazing sights. While living mostly in Kumamoto, it was great to get out, and see the places around us. Although some of these places and events seemed simple, they actually proved to be really fun.

One of the first events we did was Japanese Classical Dance, or 日舞.

We were taught 2 simple dances during our time there. Each of us were given fans to practice with. Even though the dances consisted mostly of slow and steady movements, requiring a lot of patience and memorization, we still had fun.

 Next, we had the chance to experience Japanese pottery making, or 陶芸. This did get a bit messy, and started getting a bit difficult after the clay started drying. It was also difficult to make the objects into perfect shapes, especially for those who were trying to make cups or bowls. The clay itself was tough, and took some time to mold. And there was also the worry of not having enough clay on certain parts of the object, or having too much clay in one area which would prevent the item from hardening properly.

Here we all are walking back to our bus after this trip was over. The walk back to the bus seemed the most relaxing since we had to take a long trail through the trees and bushes to get there. The sights we passed along the was were breathtaking. I really enjoyed the walk both to and from the pottery makers house.

Lastly, one of my most favorite trips thus far has been to the Japanese Theater, or 山鹿.

Though it seemed quite old, the building had history behind it. We were even told about the times the wood needed to be renovated, and were shown different parts where you could see where it had been in need of repairs. It was clear this building had been around for some time, yet did not show any signs of stopping business just yet.

Above all, I was very amazed with the architecture of the building itself. Looking up at the ceiling, we were met with this sight: 

　

The artwork on the ceiling itself was one of the most beautiful sights I had ever seen. The detail, the pictures, the artistry, it was all so overwhelming! 

Seeing the theater was a great experience. I really hope to one day see a live performance. 

During my time within the culture class at Kumamoto Gakuen I was given the opportunity to see and experience specific aspects of not only the culture within Kumamoto but also of some of the culture all over Japan. Within this blog I will share two of my favorite experiences with you.

Theatre - 山鹿

One of my most memorable field trips was 山鹿. I have always found ancient Japanese arts and cultural aspects very interesting and so getting the chance to see the local theater was a great experience for me.

Standing outside of the theater, I had no idea what to expect from the inside and so when I walked into the main hall of the theater I was pleasantly surprised. Within the theater there was a feeling of old culture meeting modern day life. I found that the inside of the theater was both comfortable and welcoming and I enjoyed the scenery which included an amazing ceiling full of company advertisements. 

I found the most fascinating part of the theater was the way they host their performances, in which the flooring of the stage is still powered by men and the actors and actresses are lifted onto the stage by hand.  I found this to be very traditional approach to their performances. I also noticed advertisement within the theater for traditional and famous performances.  Listening to the explanation of the history of the theater 

I realized that the theater is not very old itself but because of its cultural importance and traditional ways it has become an important part of the local town.

Pottery - 陶芸

One of the most active and enjoyable experiences was our trip to a local pottery house. Within this trip we got to see lots of hand made, beautiful pottery creations. We were also given a demonstration on how the process works from creating some of the more basic pottery items such at cups and plates. 

Following the demonstration we were then given our own clay to mold into anything we wanted to make. Many people chose to make cups and plates but other people made more unusual things such as ash trays and tea pots. My experience of molding clay was very interesting and I found that the process of making my cup was difficult as the clay was hard to shape whilst keeping it all in correct proportion and trying to make sure that the cup looks nice still. 

Once we had finished making our own cups or plates we wrote our name on and were told that in order to make the cups it would take around 2 months to get back to us.  During the time we had left I took some time to look around the rest of the warehouse to see some of the various models which our instructor had created. There was a wide range of things, from small cups and plates to large vases and models of dolls. The detail to each piece was incredible. 

禅寺まだ行かなかったけど、本当に面白そうと思います。また、禅に関して知ることは少しあるだけ。

これはだれかがカップを作っていた。その場合において集中の本当に必要と思います。ほかに、この場所に蜘蛛がいっぱいあるので、気を透けて！

これは私たちが踊りしていた。実は、これはちょっと面白くなかったと思うけど、少し楽しかった。全体的は、この授業は面白かった。

１．サントーリ工場見学

秋なのに晴れの日が少し暑かった。太陽の光が眩しかった。

その日、みんなと一緒にサントーリ工場に行った。

ビール工場なので、ビールの生産過程を詳しく紹介してくれた。

そして、おいしいビールを飲ませてもらった。

勉強しながらビールを楽しめるのは最高だった。

みんなの笑顔が素晴らしかった。

2．書道とパーティー

書道のゲームをしながらお菓子を食べるのは面白かった。

組を分けられて、司会さんの解説に従い、みんなが墨で漢字を書いた。

たとえ漢字を使わない外国人たちでも、書道を楽しんでいたらしい。

3．陶芸

曇りの日に陶芸を見学しに山に行った。少し寒かったが、みんなが楽しんでたらしい。

陶芸家さんが説明しながら陶土を握っていた。

みんなが一生懸命勉強している様子。真面目でしたね。

たくさんの道具を使って、自分が好きなものを作っていた。

疲れたけど楽しかったね。

試作完成！大成功だったね。

途中雨が降ったが、秋の景色、よかったね。

4．茶道

秋を味わうために留学生のお茶会が開いた。

茶道部の部員たちにお菓子を用意してくれ、薄茶を点ててくれた。

そして、茶道の先生からお茶のお点前を教えてもらった。

袱紗の直し方も面白かったね。

5．日本舞踊

優しい先生から日本舞踊を教えてくれた。

桜とソーランの歌を聴きながら踊った。

きれいなお扇子を握って、音楽のリズムに合わせて踊った。

みんな踊るのが上手だね。

6．山鹿

山鹿八千代座での見学は楽しかった。

初めて歌舞伎についてのことを紹介してもらった。

八千代座がすごいと思うよ。

解説員さんは学園大のOBだって言って、奇遇だと思った。

　　とても親切のおばさんだった。

7．秋学期およびこの一年についての感想

この一年間、大変お世話になりました。

いろいろなところに行ったり、見学したり、おいしい食べ物を食べたり、いい景色を楽しんだり、友達もできて知識も身に着け、本当に有意義な一年だと思います。

別れがさびしいことですが、この縁はきっと消えません。何年何十年経ても、みんなの笑顔、みんなとの記憶、決して忘れられません。

さよならと言っても、きっとまたどこかで会えると信じています。

これからも、よろしくお願いします。

Everyone Wednesday this semester we had a culture class with 馬場先生 in which every week we were able to experience various aspects of Japanese culture and local attractions in Kumamoto. 

今学期の毎週の水曜日に文日本化演習という授業あった。毎週留学生と日本人たちといろいろな日本の文化を経験して、いろいろな熊本の観光資源に見に行った。

One week we took a bus to Suntory beer factory, the local beer producer in Kumamoto. We were able to view the beer-making process, and learned how Suntory beer was produced from start to finish. 

熊本にあるサントリーというビール工場に行った。どうやってビールを作るのかやビールに何が入っているのか習った。

Another week we were taken to a small house in the countryside of Kumamoto to make our own pottery. We were instructed how to craft different things using clay such as cups, pots, and other decorative pottery. 

別の週は熊本の田舎にある小さな家に陶芸を作りに行った。私たちは陶芸の作り方を習って、カップやポットその他にも装飾された陶芸品を作った。

We were also taken on a tour inside Yamaga, an old traditional Japanese theatre that had been recently restored. The theatre maintained its traditional appearance and still hosted Noh and other Japanese plays.

山鹿にも連れて行ってもらった。昔の伝統的な日本の劇場があって、そこは最近復元された。この劇場には日本の伝統的な姿が残っていて、まだ能や歌舞伎を見ることができる。
